Scammers are once again taking advantage of people’s willingness to help, this time through what’s being called the “pizza payment” scam. It’s simple, unexpected, and designed to catch you off guard in the moment.
The scam usually starts with a friendly request. Someone approaches you… often in a parking lot or near a workplace and explains they’re having trouble paying for a pizza order. They might say their card isn’t working and ask if you can pay using your debit card, promising to give you cash in return. It can feel like a harmless favour, especially when the situation seems believable.
Shortly after, a second person arrives pretending to be the delivery driver. Everything appears normal, but during the payment process, your debit card may be swapped with a similar-looking card. You may not notice anything is wrong until later, when you no longer have your real card and unauthorized transactions start appearing in your account.
These scams are carefully staged. The individuals may act like strangers to each other, and even use props… like delivery bags or car signs to make the interaction feel legitimate. The goal is to create just enough urgency and trust that you don’t stop to question what’s happening.
The best way to protect yourself is to avoid using your bank card on behalf of someone else, no matter how convincing the story may be. If someone asks for help with a payment, it’s okay to politely decline.
Staying aware of these tactics is one of the strongest defenses you have. When something doesn’t feel quite right, trust your instincts and take a step back. A moment of caution can prevent a much bigger problem later.
