Derailment slows passenger train service

A day after a train derailment in Burlington, GO Transit and Via Rail service resumed Tuesday morning, but passengers were told to expect delays as workers continued to clear wreckage.

Nineteen cars of a 130-car CN freight train went off the tracks early Monday morning just south of Highway 403, apparently because of a broken wheel on one of the cars.

GO Transit said its trains are starting and ending in Burlington. Commuters west of the city will have to use buses to get around the derailment site until further notice.

Via Rail said its trains on the Toronto-Brantford-London-Windsor and Toronto-Niagara Falls routes will operate, but passengers should expect significant delays.

VIA spokesperson Katherine Calutsky said passengers will need to be patient.

“We are anticipating there will be a great deal of congestion and it will take time getting through that area,” she said.

Eastbound Via trains from Aldershot and Oakville to Ottawa and Montreal will begin in Toronto.
