Almost a Millionnaire

Now how can a mistake like this happen? A man playing penny slots at the Georgian Downs Casino in Innisfil struck it rich last week, or so he thought, when after 20 minutes of playing, he hit the jackpot…$42.9 million. When casino officials came to investigate, they reported that the machine had malfunctioned, and as such the man was not entitled to any win. The man is now suing the OLG for $42.9 million dollars plus damages.

I can understand the man’s feelings of entitlement when playing slots to see that you won $42.9 million dollars, malfunction or not. The thoughts that would be going through my mind, feelings of never having to work again, securing my family’s future, etc. The casino did offer the man 4 free buffet tickets, but personally, I don’t feel that is adequate. I don’t think that his case will hold up, that is a lot of money, and clearly, on a machine that only pays out a maximum of $9,025, a reasonable person could assume that there is an error with the machine, but still.

If you look at how much money Casino’s pull in any given year, they could afford to give the man at least the maximum payout for that machine, $9,025 plus damages. They may offer him more than that just to make this problem go away. This is now making its way through the courts, and time will tell what kindof payout, if any, this man is entitled to.
