2008 Golden Globes

The only hype over the past couple of weeks hasn’t been what the stars are going to wear, it has been who is going to show up. There was talk of cancelling the show all together, but settle for anouncing the winners via pre-taped telecast.

The show was not very exciting, and I found it in poor taste to immediately begin talking about who should have won right after anouncing the winner. The winner is……but should have been…..due to a better performance, nice. I found myself switching over to a repeat coverage of the People’s Choice Awards from earlier in the week. I found that coverage to be more exciting, with actual taped acceptance speeches, and footage from previous years winners.

There were a lot of surprise winners this year, and a lot of upsets, including Canadian nominated Ellen Page and Hairspray newcomer Nikki Blonsky, who both lost in their respective films. Angelina Jolie lost for the first time for her role in A Mighty Heart, and Johnny Depp took his first Golden Globe after 7 nominations for Sweeney Todd. Best picture went to Atonement, while Daniel Day-Lewis returned from semi-retirement to win best actor for There will be Blood.
