Last week, the nominations for the 2008 Grammy’s were anounced in New York City. Kanye West once again leads the race with 8 nominations for his album “Graduation”. West previously received 8 nominations back in 2006 for his album “Late Registration”, in which he only took home 3 grammys.
Kanye West has been the forefront of the media over the past few years due to outspoken limericks, childish temper tantrums, poor sportsmanship, and most recently, the death of his mother. Kanye’s mother was undergoing surgery a few weeks ago for some cosmetic surgery, but was unable to make it through.
Could this be the year that Kayne takes home the award for Album of the Year? I certainly hope not. Others nominated in this category include Foo Fighters for Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace; Vince Gill for These Days; Herbie Hancock for River: The Joni Letters; and Amy Winehouse for Back to Black.
My feelings towards Kanye’s music are biased based on his personality and his public appearances. I think I could actually like Kayne if he would take the Dixie Chick’s example and just Shut Up and Sing. His over the top ego combined with his ability to always blame his loses on something other than the competition actually being better than him has made me lose respect for him as a person.
Lucky for Kanye my vote won’t be counted on grammy night, and that maybe the Academy can look past the biases and focus their attention on the music itself. Don’t expect any big names to win any Grammys, that’s hardly ever the case. An artist can have the biggest album of the year, and break several records, and still go home with nothing.
Justin Timberlake is nominated in Record of the year for What Goes Around…Comes Around, which was a massive hit last year, as well as Beyonce’s Irreplaceable and Rhianna’s Umbrella. The song that will probably take it is either Foo Fighter’s Pretender, or Amy Winehouse’s Rehab. The more unique the song/singer is, or the more political the song/album is, the better chance of taking home a Grammy.
My Predictions for Grammy Night on February 10, 2008 are as follows:
Record of the Year: Rehab – Amy Winehouse
Album of the Year: Back to Black – Amy Winehouse
Song of the Year: Rehab – Amy Winehouse
New Artist of the Year: Amy Winehouse
By the way, who’s Amy Winehouse….?? Remember when a little known Norah Jones swept the Grammys.
Best Rock Album: Foo Fighters
Best R&B Album: Jill Scott – The Real Thing
Best Rap Album: Graduation – Kanye West (Just Because)
